Stephen Ward, Director of Strategy and External Relations (Deputy Chief Executive since 2020) at the Council for Licenced Conveyancers

Stephen Ward leads Regulatory Policy, Strategy, Stakeholder Relations and Communications, and represents the CLC and its members in meetings with all levels of government, other regulators and at representative bodies for lawyers. He will be discussing the CLC’s outlook and views on current risk issues including AML, undertakings, complaints and more.

1:45pm Changes in the claims settlement landscape  |  Sam Moore & John Eastlake, Caytons Law

Caytons provide legal and claims management services to both the insurance industry and to professional practices. They have considerable experience of dealing with all manner of claims, from large complex cases to small “but rarely” simple matters. 

Sam Moore specialises in professional indemnity (PI) claims and policy coverage disputes and has dealt with a wide range of PI claims against conveyancers, solicitors and construction professionals, as well as significant property damage claims. As a result, Sam has a strong insight into both insurers’ and insureds’ requirements, which has helped him enable each to reduce or mitigate their exposure to claims. 

John Eastlake is a professional liability specialist. He has advised insurers on a wide range of professional liability claims against solicitors, barristers and licenced conveyancers, including those involving commercial and residential property, probate, tax, pensions, and corporate finance.

Steve Brett is the Co-Founder of E3 Compliance Training, whose focus is to work with both customers and subject matter experts to ensure that their courses are the best they can be. Steve brings experience from previous roles at UK LegalTech Association, Clarissimus, OANDA and Capital One. 

 

2:50pm The road to 2025 renewal  |  Phil Limb & Marianne McWilliams, Account Executives at Miller

Phil Limb and Marianne McWilliams jointly lead Miller’s proposition for CLC firms. Marianne has over 30 years’ broking experience and has operated in a number of large-scale multinational firms and smaller, specialist companies. Phil has over 15 years’ experience in the PI market, initially working on the underwriting side for over 10 years, before moving over to broking.

3:45pm Panel discussion: Staff retention & workplace culture  |  Calum MacLean, Risk Manager at Miller and Stuart Forsdike, Senior Partner at PCS Legal

Calum MacLean is Miller's Risk Manager, working primarily with solicitor and CLC firms, however his experience also spans across accountants and construction professionals. He has worked in insurance for 16 years, primarily in risk management, with a particular emphasis on the solicitor market. Calum is a self-confessed ideas person and loves looking at how to make things work better with a pragmatic approach.

Stuart Forsdike is a Senior Partner at PCS Legal. He has over 25 years’ conveyancing experience, specialising in residential and commercial conveyancing, and wills and probate. He is a qualified Licensed Conveyancer, with multiple industry awards such as Highly Commended Managing Partner of the Year, and shortlisted for Conveyancer of the Year.


4:15pm Spotlight on the future of open property data standards  |  Angela Hesketh, Executive Member of the Open Property Data Association (OPDA)  

Angela Hesketh is an Executive Member of the Open Property Data Association, which is the trade association responsible for managing and developing our open property data standards across government and industry. She is also the Head of UK Market Development for PEXA. Angela is a dual-qualified conveyancer with a profound understanding of the challenges within residential property law and legal practice. Transitioning to consultancy, she advised startups on reshaping the industry whilst streamlining conveyancing processes.

This session will explore the Property Data Trust Framework, the drive towards digitisation, and the creation of a single source of truth and a common data language. It’ll also examine how these developments align with the Digital Information and Smart Data Bill, setting the stage for greater transparency, efficiency, and innovation across the property sector. 

 

4:45pm Panel discussion: The  future of open property data standards  |  Angela Hesketh, Executive Member of OPDA; Sue Bence, Chief Legal Officer at Simply Conveyancing; and David Jabbari, CEO at Muve  

Sue Bence is the Chief Legal Officer and board member at Simply Conveyancing Group of companies. She joined the firm in 2022 and has overall accountability for Simply’s operations across several locations, including a large cohort of remote working colleagues. Sue has held a wide breadth of practice, operational, compliance, leadership and Board positions in notable legal and professional services practices in both the UK and Australia, including Kennedys, Leigh Day & Co, Slater & Gordon and global consulting firm Leyton.

David Jabbari, CEO at Muve, is a solicitor and entrepreneur in the legal services market. After 8 years as a global director at international law firm Allen & Overy, he became the CEO of City law firm Barlow Lyde & Gilbert, where he acquired the major commercial law firm Halliwells and ran the merger with Clyde & Co – then the biggest ever merger of two UK law firms.  For the three years before he founded Muve, David managed PE-funded ABS businesses, delivering legal brands for large retail brands such as Saga and Dignity Funerals, and was a pioneer in legaltech. Muve was ranked as one of the UK’s 100 fastest growing companies in the 2023 and 2024 Sunday Times 100.
