“My main advice to graduates and students would be to not limit yourself in one particular field, expand and research other industries because there are a lot of job opportunities out there that you may not realise you enjoy.”
Amy Hills, Account Handler at Miller, shares her experience as an intern, which led to her permanent employment in Miller’s leading Sports & Entertainment (S&E) team.
Amy recently graduated from the University of Surrey, with a first-class degree in Sports & Exercise Science. During her time at Uni, she was part of the women’s cricket first team.
Can you tell us a bit about your internship at Miller?
Having no previous insurance experience, I went into the internship without any insurance background, which meant I had to start from scratch in understanding how the industry worked. I closely followed some of the placements that my team members were working on straight away and they were brilliant in explaining and helping me understand how the processes worked.
As the weeks progressed my responsibilities increased, including emailing underwriters, helping out on the bigger placements etc. I also had many opportunities to meet with underwriters in the market which was very interesting and enabled me to learn a lot more about the industry.
I have also had the opportunity to visit Lloyds a few times, and speaking to underwriters face to face was a very insightful experience.
What advice would you give to other graduates/students?
My main advice to graduates and students would be to not limit yourself in one particular field, expand and research other industries because there are a lot of job opportunities out there that you may not realise you enjoy.
Look for internships/summer programs, as the connections and experience you can gain may even result in job opportunities (like in my case)!
What your new role will be at Miller?
My new role at Miller will be Account Handler in the Sports and Entertainment team. I will be working alongside the other brokers in the team, with a keen interest in helping with the cricket placements.
Tim Nagle, Head of Sports & Entertainment at Miller said:
Amy Hills was the first intern we’ve had in the S&E team, and we are delighted with how successful this placement was, we are very pleased that Amy has decided to join us in a full-time position. Miller’s internship scheme is an excellent opportunity for final year university students to experience the industry first hand.
