People make insurance dynamic
Those of us already working in the world of insurance, already have an appreciation of the positive contribution that our industry makes to both society and the global economy. It is the people in our industry that by their efforts make this happen. Therefore helping the future generations develop and to play their part in shaping our dynamic business sector is one of the biggest collective responsibilities that we all have. This article provides some insight into our commitment working alongside others to fulfil that obligation. It is not without its challenges, but is also great fun and highly rewarding.
Education, Education, Education
In-house at Miller, we have a comprehensive suite of development opportunities to support everyone in our business, ensuring that we build a strong talent pipeline to continue to provide exceptional service to our clients. We invest in the technical knowledge, professional qualifications and business skills of our people for your benefit, including bringing the next generation into the workplace through our multiple entry points.
Entry-level recruitment happens in two main categories. The first is for school leavers at the age of 18 and 19 that have passed their exams, but who do not want to go into continuing education. These people can apply, and if successful, become part of our college leaver apprenticeship scheme.
The second option, our graduate scheme, gives successful applicants a permanent role in one of our specialist teams, where they can gain responsibility, exposure and expertise whilst gaining a Level 6 apprenticeship and their CII Advanced Diploma as part of an accelerated development programme.
Continuing education and business training
A particularly relevant area of focus for our clients and Miller is around enhancing the capabilities and knowledge of our producer-brokers. We have an in-house Producer Academy, which helps our people to be in the best position to truly understand and respond to clients’ needs, working in close partnership with their business to tailor solutions from our wide range of products and services that our whole team can offer to provide the insured the protection they need.
We also host US and Canada based University students on a summer internship each year, where they contribute towards real, meaningful projects.
Working with Lloyd’s
Looking to the future, we are very pleased and proud to be enthusiastic supporters of Lloyd’s educational initiatives. Here we briefly highlight three of those initiatives:
Lloyd’s Boot Camp
This is targeted at those fairly new to the industry that have notched a few years of experience and want to learn more about Lloyd’s, how it works and the commercial advantages it can bring to their clients.
In 2020 more than 100 delegates from 18 states participated in what had to be a remote, but highly interactive event. Participants qualified for six hours of continuing education in 10 states. They also learned how to access the market and the important role that brokers play in making Lloyd’s the number 1 E&S market.
In 2021 the event will be “in person” in New York September 23 and 24. You can register your interest here.
For more information on Boot Camp, contact Lloyd’s U.S. Central Regional Director Pat Talley at pat.talley@lloyds.com
Lloyd’s Broker Academy
The Boot Camp itself serves as an appetizer for the annual North American Broker Academy held in London. This is an immersive week for 35 to 40 “rising star” intermediaries with an educational structure, that over its 25 plus years, has evolved into a highly experiential programme including time in The Room on a box with underwriters, shadow broking, CEO round table and dinner in the Adam room (Lloyd’s board room).
Broker Academy Alumni
In turn, there is a fledgling Broker Academy Alumni group being formed. This will act as an advisory counsel for future Academy’s and initiatives. In return, the members will be closely advised on developments at Lloyd's and will have exclusive access to events such as the recent personal briefing by Lloyd’s CEO John Neal.
Educational webinars
Throughout the year, Miller attends industry events in person or hosts educational webinars virtually. For example, earlier this year we presented on ‘Navigating Lloyd’s: a Broker’s Perspective’ during Lloyd’s at RIMS Live 2021. You can watch the recording of the event here.
If you would like to set up an educational webinar with us on a particular subject, please contact Jamie Young.
