I joined Miller upon completing Sixth Form in Ipswich, where I studied English Language, History and Business Studies. I was already familiar with the insurance industry, as a family member has worked within insurance for a long time. However, undertaking two weeks’ work experience at an insurer, shadowing the Claims department, gave me a greater insight into the industry and I knew that it was one that I would enjoy working in and would give me great opportunity for professional development.
I heard about Miller through my school careers team. The more I researched Miller as a business, the more it interested me. The variety of different insurance services that Miller provides (from the Sports and Entertainment side of the business to Marine and Energy insurance solutions), was really interesting.
The Apprenticeship Scheme opportunity appealed to me as there was a clear emphasis on learning and development, with the opportunity to gain the CII qualification whilst also learning on-the-job being a massive pull. Since joining, Miller has really supported my professional development and given me the time I need to focus on studying for my Apprenticeship qualification, and it’s been great to see the real-world impact of the exam material in my day-to-day work.
Miller has a very collaborative culture and I really enjoy working with colleagues with such a variety of skills.
My area of expertise is in Delegated Authority and Professional Risks. Our business area arranges insurance coverage for professionals like accountants, architects, and media and technology firms. We work on behalf of clients from so many different industries, and in a huge variety of geographies globally. My team is responsible for inputting the details of broker’s placements (like premium, limits and territories) and putting them in to the system. I also prepare evidence of insurance coverage for our clients and submit the placements to Xchanging (the London insurance processing service).
Miller has a very collaborative culture and I really enjoy working with colleagues with such a variety of skills. Working closely with Miller’s brokers, account handlers, and centralised operations teams means I have been able to gain great working relationships and have built a good network at Miller. There are also a wide range of initiatives that Miller promotes, such as diversity and inclusion and the availability of mental/physical wellbeing tools – these were especially great during the lockdowns in the peak of the pandemic. The flexibility for colleagues to work in an agile way is inclusive and supports different individual circumstances, such as for parents/carers during school days.
If you’re considering applying to Miller, I would 100% recommend it. It’s a great culture which offers fantastic support for its employees, and great development opportunities for people wanting to further their career.
