I didn’t know much about the insurance industry before
joining Miller in 2014, having previously worked in the voluntary, public and education sector. Throughout my application, research and interviews, I quickly realised how interesting and relevant the insurance industry really is.
Just before joining Miller, I was running programmes for corporate executives at Cambridge University’s Judge Business School. I wanted to work in-house within learning and development, and within in a financial services environment. The culture of the company I was moving to was important to me, and I loved the sound of Miller. Miller recognised my transferable skills and experience; not having worked in learning and development or insurance before wasn’t a barrier.
As Miller’s Learning & Development Manager, I’m responsible for all aspects of our learning and development provision, supporting our business to achieve its strategic objectives and supporting our people to fulfil their potential during their career with us. I work closely with all areas of the business to respond to their development needs, and often collaborate closely with marketing and communications, compliance and IT to help deliver development solutions.
We really look after our people; it’s a collaborative, supportive and friendly culture.
Making an impact
Working with people across our business to identify what’s needed and to deliver projects that have impact is so enjoyable. Miller is a perfectly sized company for great relationships to be built across the organisation, whilst providing real challenge and variety in your role. I want to make a difference at an individual, team and organisational level; I am able to do this at Miller, and we are fully supported by a leadership team who believe in developing our people.
Professional and personal development
Since joining Miller, I’ve been supported to train as a coach and to achieve my Chartered status with the professional body for HR – the CIPD. I have also studied for the CII Certificate in Insurance, which has strengthened my knowledge of our industry.
A collaborative culture
We really look after our people; it’s a collaborative, supportive and friendly culture, with lots to get involved in. I’ve been part of our Employee Forum, and am now on our lunch and learn committee, ‘Connections’. We’re proud of our commitment to diversity, inclusion and the wellbeing of our colleagues, and I really enjoy working closely with our inclusion alliances – Gender, Pride and Culture.
Miller is a great place to have a fulfilling career. Check out what we do and what we can offer, and tell us what most interests you, and what skills and experiences you can offer. We’d love to hear from you!
